4 Amazing (but Simple) Hacks to Easily Kill 4 Types of Negative Pandemic Mental States
You sit down for dinner, tensed about work the next day, you surf the internet.
Something happens: you jump off your chair without finishing the food, remove your t-shirt, spin it with one finger and throw it on the floor as though you are the boss and foolishly jog towards your room while you shout: “Mom, we have a lockdown from tomorrow.” It was on social media.
Fast forward nine months now, the lockdown doesn’t seem to get over. The pandemic seems scary. Isolating is hard. Entertainment reduced. Life seems to be stopped.
I won’t try to lie by saying how hard this pandemic was for me just because I have to seem credible. It didn’t even matter to me. First of all, because I’m grateful to God because we all are safe, at least so far.
Secondly, this was my normal life even before the pandemic: I went out only for school. Rest of the time? I was working and studying, enjoying and dancing at home.
What’s fascinating about that is: you get to cope up with all types of states of mind mostly because you were an alien — you’re always at home when everyone is out. When you’re alone, you observe what works and why it works — not because you have to, but because you can.
What’s more fascinating is: coping up with the four primary (negative) mental states requires some simple hacks that might seem absurd to most but I figured out these works best. I also learned why those works, along with how you can imitate them.
I am sharing this not because I am credible, but because this is a serious issue. There’s a rise of depressed and anxious people (especially teenagers) post-pandemic. Suicide rate almost doubled. I didn’t even know this unless yesterday.
Before reading below, let us take three seconds to be grateful to God because we’re still safe. We’re better than everyone. The terror and sorrow of the families who lost a family member or a relative are vast. The mental state people get into when they hear their Covid result is positive is unimaginable.
Let this be your new status from now: “I’m better than good by the grace of God.” rather than “Life is boring.”
Done? Ohh, and by the way, every state is interconnected with the other. We’ll know why.
Got it? Let’s start.
“Covid cases rose by 5% today.”
“Total covid cases today: 2548, 34 deaths”
These news headlines over social media are enough to scare every part of your body.
You fear catching this virus today.
You fear about where you’ll be taken once your result comes positive.
You fear dying.
And fear is the worst thing to have. Ghost doesn’t kill us, the fear of it does.
One Hack That Works:
Hack#1: Timebox social media.
Consume it less. Make a deadline to stop using social media. I use an app called StayFree to help me with that. Just open the app and they’ll instruct you what to do.
The reason you watch more social media is that you’re bored or lazy. Let’s kill that too.
Laziness happens when we always sit idle doing nothing, i.e procrastinating some important work just to watch that last series, sitting on your comfy couch, dimmed lights, air-conditioner at 26°C.
Earlier you had to keep working — running to the store, drive to the bank, pick up your special one, office work, and whatnot.
Now you sit idle and watch because you fear facing the reality of the dreading pandemic. Sitting idle cools the body and freezes you. (But mind you, laziness isn’t always bad.)
Without activities, our body deactivates, resulting in laziness. Here, laziness is being unable to get up and do some important work.
One Hack That Works:
Here’s how to do it:
- Open any app such as 7 Minutes Workout (I love it not because number 7 is my lucky number, but because 7 minutes is all it takes)
- Start a new round and follow whatever they instruct. Like me, if you hate orders by others, you can even dance by disobeying their instruction…no worries…it’s alright
It just takes 7 minutes but it works, because you’re excited to finish this in 7 minutes and you move your body while doing so. It increases the oxygen flow in your overall body, hence warms you up, refreshes you because of sweat release and you can move, therefore you can get to work.
You’re worried about your salary being halved.
You’re disturbed about losing your job.
You’re tensed about your family.
These are legit but these little things cause mental stress and you always remain sad.
One Hack That Works:
Hack#3: Get a digital certification about anything you love.
When you’re certified, you become dignified. You get a sense of confidence and freedom. Even if you lose your job, you can easily get another one with your knowledge you gained. Confidence is the best thing to have, especially during a pandemic of this kind.
Without sitting idle or worrying about what could go wrong, get certified and magnify your confidence, immediately. Here are a few resources to get you started:
We get bored when there’s no variety.
“Eat. Sleep. Watch TV. Work. Repeat.”
That might sound cool but that’s not what we enjoy, even if we have a t-shirt of it.
Variety of colours is what makes the rainbow colours. It’s the same for your life as well. Variety of events make your life colourful and meaningful.
One Hack That Works:
While you can’t add much variety in your life like earlier — earlier your mom suddenly asked you to go buy some eggs. Now she never does it.
Earlier getting late to pick up your special one because you were stuck in the bank queue was fun. Now you don’t even get a chance.
Hack #4: Read books or blogs.
Reading books makes us imagine. It questions our thinking pattern. It ignites curiosity. Those are a variety. You experience the variety and at the same time think variety. You enjoy that. You learn too. You grow as well.
Ohh, again, your one excuse? “Man, I don’t want to waste money.”
I have some resources for you:
- Open Library offers free books.
- Manybooks is very kind to be free.
- Project Gutenberg is more philanthropic than Bill Gates.
- Niklas Göke is so kind he reads the book for you. You just need to have four minutes to steal his knowledge, for free.
- You can read tonnes of blogs on anything you love, here on Medium.
Ohh, and one more thing: doing the same thing daily in the same set time is boring as well. Don’t always try to get certified when you’re anxious about your old job. You can try that when you feel lazy as well. Just change the pattern, your routine. That’s variety. That’s exciting.
Take This Away
Reduce/stop social media to stop the fear of the pandemic.
Done? Now you have more time to get certified.
Ohh, you feel lazy? Just dance for 7 minutes.
You feel bored now? Read some books.
See ya after I’m done dancing for 7 minutes. Take care.
