Stephen Is Wrong: “Don’t Kill Your Darlings, Have an Affair With Them.”

“Kill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart, kill your darlings.” — Stephen King

Your darlings are special. They might be ugly but you loved them in the first sight. You got their number after a lot of tries. You can put makeup on them but don’t kill them. You don’t kill them, you kill your creativity that way.

They are invaluable.

They are your children’s mother.

They are the ones who help you reproduce something great.

They are your mate.

After you are done reproducing something with their help, keep them safe in a safehouse (like Trello, Evernote, Google Docs, etc.) and keep going back to them. Have affair with them when your creativity is off or you need inspiration. They are always young.

Do the same for your abnormal children as well. Keep them safe. Go back to them often. Love them. They’ll always inspire you. They are your pride.

There are no such things as bad or old. Everyone is special and valuable.

Carve this on your back tomorrow no matter how much it hurts:

“Love your darlings, enjoy your darlings, even when it breaks your wife’s cute little heart, love your darlings.”
